A. Relevance and sustainability context

A.1 Policy relevance

Value added is a key economic indicator that shows the contribution of different industries to macroeconomic performance. By the assessment of the bioeconomy value added in Germany and its development in time, policy can evaluate the economic relevance of the bioeconomy.

As the bioeconomy is not a category known by the ISIC (International Standard Industrial Classification) that builds the backbone of all official statistics, the assignment of industries to the bioeconomy is a crucial prerequisite for the determination of the bioeconomy value added.

A.2 Sustainability and / or comparative evaluation options

The bioeconomy value added can be compared with the value added of other industries / parts of the economy as well as with the overall value added of the German economy.

Data is available for the timeframe 2008-2023 on an annual basis. The underlying data is updated every year. Since the relations don't change significantly that quickly, an update every 2 years should be sufficient.

Bioeconomy value added can be assessed for up to 72 sectors/industries.

Tier I describes the 30 core, priority indicators defined by the project that are highly relevant to represent a specific thematic area and which together with other Tier I indicators forms a systemic perspective of the various risks, opportunities and trade-offs within the Bioeconomy.
